“Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth.” Colossians 3:2
To keep your mind set on the things above is to be focused upon God and His kingdom. The danger in setting your mind on the things of the earth is that you will become enticed and influenced by the things of the earth. Rather, we should be enticed and influenced by God.
When the things of this world are turned upside down and everything falls apart and your focused on this world, your world will quickly be turned upside down and your life will fall apart. However, when you are focused on God and His kingdom you will know, regardless of how bad the things of this earth get, He is still in total control.
On the other hand, when things are going perfectly well, in fact, things are amazing, and you are focused on the world rather than God and His kingdom, you can easily be led into the sin of pride and self-righteousness. You will begin to think that you have accomplished something and that you are worthy of praise and neglect the fact that it was God who blessed and provided. After all, Jesus did say, “Apart from Me, you can do nothing.” And, if your eyes are worldly focused rather than Godly focused, nothing is exactly what you will accomplish. Nothing of eternal value anyway.
So, set your mind on the things above for when things go wrong you will know who can make them right, and when things are right, you will know who rightly deserves the praise.
